Even with all of the warts of humankind, more specifically familykind, it is good for the soul to be surrounded by family and friends. The mundane conversations, the stress of gossip, the friction of weirdness. All of these things are superceded by the love and kindness that family gives without asking for emotional payment in return. These holiday weekends take a toil on me in time and emotional energy, but I'd miss all of it if I disappeared to another city. All of this makes me all of me. I'll always want to be fed by my friends, nature, and writing, but only family can fill certain crevices of your life.
